Many parts of infrastructure (like bridges) are at least 10 years past due for repairs. Foregoing these repairs further is gambling with human lives and playing chicken with additional economic costs.
Likewise, America needs to invest in better mass transportation. Though this is likely not something that can be done for at least a decade, a new High Speed Rail system is worth looking into for passenger travel between the distant parts of the country. Existing rail system could be expanded to a wider rail system with fewer stops, which would focus entirely on freight services. Finally, trolleys or trams running out from city cores would allow cities to grow farther once more, which would allow additional homes to be built without needing to grow upward. Depending on how these systems are built, they could likewise be prepped for higher speeds eventually to allow even farther distances for each major city.
